Location: Hagerstown, MD

Type: Full time

Vehicle Processing Technician: Monday – Friday, with Occasional Saturdays, Day Shift, $18 – 20/ hour

SUMMARY:

Perform an array of functions that includes safely processing incoming vehicles for recycling and dismantling for the scrap metal recycling facility. Properly and safely drain automotive fluids, remove hazardous materials, and prepare vehicles for crushing, shredding and parts removal. May also assist with traffic control and occasional forklift operation.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

In order to perform this job successfully, individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.   • Education and/ or Experience: High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED), or one to three months related experience, and/or training, or equivalent combination or education and experience required. Previous recycling or metals experience a plus.
  • Other Skills: Mechanical aptitude, safety focus, basic tool bag required, great communication, and ability to follow instructions in a busy environment.
  • Language and Communication Skills: Ability to read, write and interpret in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Physical Demands: “Heavy”: Exerting up to 75 lbs of force occasionally, or up to 40 lbs of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Requires six or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in an eight-hour day. Sitting may be required intermittently and occasionally. Stooping and bending required often. Must be able to see, listen and respond to dangerous situations.
  • Work Environment: Usually working outdoors with occasional work indoors or working in various weather conditions. Valid Driver’s License required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect vehicles for processing.
  • Safely remove and handle batteries, catalytic converters, tires, and other hazardous components.
  • Drain fluids from end-of-life vehicles including gas, diesel, engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid.
  • Prepare vehicles for dismantling, crushing or shredding according to company procedures.
  • Use pumps, hand tools, and basic shop equipment to extract fluids and remove parts.
  • Properly store and label recovered fluids and materials for recycling or disposal.
  • Operate forklift.
  • Maintains safe and clean work environment by keeping prep area clean and free of clutter; sweep and shovel.
  • Wear proper safety equipment and follow OSHA safety standards and environmental regulations for handling automotive fluids and waste.
  • Report leaks, spills, or unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor.
  • Assist with general scrap yard duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or designated manager.
